California-based robotics company Figure has unveiled its second-generation humanoid robot, F.02. Initially targeting commercial production lines, the company envisions a future where these robots serve as bipedal butlers in homes. Founded in 2022 by entrepreneur Brett Adcock, Figure aims to bring a “commercially viable general-purpose humanoid robot” to market.
Adcock, known for his work with Vettery and Archer Aviation, has guided the company from its inception through to the deployment of its first robot, which has been integrated into BMW’s workforce and enhanced with conversational capabilities from OpenAI.
The F.02 represents a significant upgrade over its predecessor, featuring a complete redesign of hardware and software. The enhancements include advanced AI systems, computer vision, battery pack, electronics, sensors, and actuators. Notable improvements include onboard microphones and speakers for human interaction, six RGB cameras for environmental perception, and a vision language model for “common-sense visual reasoning.
The robot’s AI-driven vision system, powered by six RGB cameras, enables it to understand and interact with its surroundings autonomously. This system is bolstered by a 3x increase in computational power, allowing for complex AI tasks to be performed without human intervention.
Designed with sleek aesthetics, the F.02 sports a gun-metal gray finish and features internal wiring for improved reliability. Its advanced joint design includes high-torque shoulder, knee, and hip joints, providing a wide range of motion. Additionally, its human-scale robot hands boast 16 degrees of freedom and human-equivalent strength, enabling a variety of tasks.
A new 2.25-kWh custom battery pack enhances energy delivery by over 50%, although specific runtime figures are not yet available. The F.02 has already begun practical applications, such as assembling sheet metal parts at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina facility, where it also engages in AI data collection and use case training.
Figure aims to enhance productivity and efficiency while improving the quality of life for humans. With the advanced capabilities of the F.02, the company is one step closer to realizing this vision.
